Habele's commitment to Micronesian students
Partnering with local educators and traditional leaders, Habele supports projects that provide students with a sense of purpose, accomplishment and identity. These range from after school clubs assembling and programing robots to groups of young men learning the techniques of traditional Caroline canoe building from their village elders. Habele also coordinates with students and teachers in the United States who volunteer their time and talent to support these extracurricular programs
Culturally focused projects are particularly important to Habele. The islanders participating understand that Neighboring Island migration to the center (Yap Proper and the other four "large" state capitals) continues to grow at a staggering rate. Most often, children and grandchildren of these migrants do not experience typical Outer Island social and work experiences. The result is both a concrete loss of specialized skills passed down through such activities, as well as the distinctive Outer Island cultural identity that flow from them.
